Tata Communications is also looking to enter 4G space

India’s
leading
telecommunication
company
Tata
Communications is
also
looking
to enter 4G space in coming days. Tata Communications took part in the BWA auction but left with no win. In 2G & 3G space Tata Teleservices is not even in top 3 slots, but India’s iconic business group cannot ignore the potential of 4th generation wireless broadband services in India and targets an entry into 4G segment. Now some reports indicates that Tata may enter into a tie up with Reliance Infotel, country’s only pan India 4G spectrum winner as there are some talks between them. It should be noted that Tata Communications owns prominent tower company Viom Networks (earlier known as Tata-Quippo). So Tata Communications can offer towers, optical fiber network & international gateway to Reliance Infotel. Similar prospectus also comes from Reliace Communication, owned by Anil Ambani. It also peeps the fact Reliance Industries is in talks with several passive infrastructure providers and can enter into agreements with more than one companies. Tata Communications is also looking to enter 4G space directly by buying Qualcomm’s asset of four circles’ BWA spectrum as hinted by NDTV. But as Qualcomm is messed up with the four companies for four circles and one ISP license the buy-out will be delayed for months. Qualcomm entered the BWA auction to ensure LTE roll out and also announced that eventually they will leave the Indian ISP market. Industry rumor is Airtel is keen to buy Qualcomm’s wireless broadband business as Qualcomm holds lucrative circles like Delhi & Mumbai. Mumbai and Maharastra are like den of Tata Communications, where they have great base. It is expected that Tata Comm will try their best to buy out atleast Mumbai’s 4G license from Qualcomm.

Airtel Hikes its Prepaid Tariff

Bad news for Airtel prepaid customers across Delhi-NCR, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Mumbai, Madhya Pradesh & Chattisgarh and Kerala, Airtel today announced that it has hiked its prepaid tariff (Pay Per Min and Pay Per Second plan) for the above circles.

When we asked them regarding the tariff hike Airtel Spokesperson quotes that “Telecom is probably the only industry where despite increasing inflation, tariffs have been falling unabatedly. Continuously declining margins, high 3G & BWA auction prices, constrained spectrum and rural roll out aspirations leave us with little choice but to make some price corrections. We are committed to enhance value for our customers through continued investments in network, technology, customer experience and life enriching services.”

Now the subscribers who opted for per minute basic plna will now have to pay 60 paisa per minute for local and STD calls and 90 paisa for calls to landlines, SMS would be charged at Rs.1.5 Local and National SMS’s. While Per Second Plan users will be charged 1.2paisa per second for local and STD calls to all network across India. The new tariff will comes into place when the validity of the existing packs gets over.

Revised /Increased tariff for Airtel Advantage and Freedom Plan subscribers (effective from 22 July 2011) : The new tariff for own network (Airtel to Airtel) calls will be 60 paisa per minute (existing 50 paisa) in most of all telecom circles. However the call charges for Airtel to other network’s mobile calls will be slashed to 60 paisa/min from the existing 75 paisa/min.

Airtel to landline call charges will be increased to 90 paisa/min from the existing 75 paisa/min. Local SMS rate will be Rs. 1 and National SMS will be charged for Rs. 1.50.

All new customers enrolling in the Airtel Advantage/Freedom packs will be charged on the revised/Increased tariffs. While all existing subscribers will continue to avail the existing tariffs till the expiry of their tariff validity period.

The Indian telecom industry feels that increase in tariff is most important to sustain in the highly competitive market with almost 13 to 14 mobile service operators in all the telecom circles. According to industry sources, some other operators are like Vodafone Essar, TTSL (Tata Docomo and Tata Indicom) likely to follow the trend.

So now what do you think regarding the new tariff hike do you think other operators will also follow Airtel’s move what is your take do let us know via comments.

Tata Docomo Kicks Off New Campaign with Bollywood Icon Ranbir Kapoor

Cutting
through
the
clutter
that
the Indian
telecom
landscape
finds itself in—with customers forced to jostle with confusing and complicated products, services and tariff plans—Tata Docomo is ‘Doing the New ’ again, with the launch of its new brand campaign, aptly titled ‘Keep It Simple ’. The icing on the cake is the telling depiction of the simplicity in Tata Docomo’s refreshing new campaign by none other than the Company ’s new brand ambassador —Bollywood superstar Ranbir Kapoor . And what better time to launch this exciting and innovative campaign than during the Indian Premier League, which will feature all of India’s 15 cricketing heroes who recently brought home the ICC World Cup! With impactful rendition of many an act(s) that mark our daily experiences in life and with our mobile phones, Ranbir will
drive home the Keep It Simple message through the April and May months of the IPL series. Tata DOCOMO’s unique Keep It Simple Campaign is in a form of a stand-up comedy show with many episodes, which will be aired during the course of this IPL season. It focuses largely on how Tata DOCOMO simplifies the telecom experience, and hence the consumer’s life, by providing differentiated products and services. Each individual advertisement starts by illustrating a complexity in the category, and presents the Tata DOCOMO product and/or service as a means of simplifying things. Scheduled to go on air on 8 April 2011, this campaign is simple, captures the various moods of Ranbir —depicting those of Tata DOCOMO. “I have
always
believed
in
being
different and
doing
things
in
a
unique and
new
way
— which is what made me jump at the chance to associate with
Tata Docomo, which is such a close replica of my own persona,” said Ranbir Kapoor, expressing his excitement at this new connection in his life. “What really connects me to Tata Docomo is the youth appeal that they have. They keep it really simple, and that ’s what the whole format of this campaign is all about— Keep It Simple, Silly. We have too many things in our lives to worry about. I love the simplicity of Tata Docomo and this new campaign—it will start with making people laugh, and make their lives oh so simple … We had a blast making this campaign and I hope people have a blast watching it too, ” Ranbir added.

Indian Mobile Entertainment Industry To Touch $5 billion by 2015

The
mobile
entertainment
industry
in
India is
witnessing
significant
growth
and
Tavess forecasts
this
market
to reach $4.9 billion in 2015 from $1.2 billion in 2009, growing at a CAGR of 26% in the period 2009-2015. Tavess believes that mobile entertainment has a huge potential in India and the current localization of mobile entertainment content is driving the industry in the right direction, bringing in greater usability of content. In the coming years mobile entertainment landscape will see several changes with respect to greater integration of mobile entertainment services with social networking, increased significance of user generated content, which will be a major
focus area for telecom operators, and the growth of infotainment services. Tavess also expects a rise in mobile advertising programs focused on providing credits to users for watching advertisements. Mobile music will, however, continue to dominate the mobile entertainment services landscape with significant growth potential presented by mobile video and TV. Mobile music is the most demanded entertainment service by the Indian consumers with ring back tones and ring tones being the most popular, followed by single track music downloads. Mobile operators are placing great emphasis on music streaming services with players such as Vodafone, Reliance, and Idea offering music streaming at very affordable prices. For example, Vodafone offers subscription-based music streaming services for INR 50 per month ($1.09), which provides subscribers access to its music station with 40,000 songs, and 30 music channels in nine languages. Similarly, handset manufacturers are taking several initiatives to tap the opportunity presented by the Indian digital music market. For example, Nokia has launched its music store under the brand Ovi for Nokia handset owners. Ovi is focusing on providing localized content to users and offers Indian users with a choice of 3.5 million tracks. Gaming on mobile phones is also gaining traction with leading Indian gaming companies, such as Zapak, ibibo, and Indiagames, launching mobile based gaming platforms providing users access to multiple games while incorporating social networking functionalities with gaming. Gaming in India is gaining market owing to content localization, for example, t20fever.com launched by Indiagames, and ICC World Cup 2011 game launched by Zapak. The mobile gaming market is also being cashed in by major handset providers that are launching sophisticated handsets with advanced functionalities for gaming. Tavess expects greater adoption of multi-player mobile games, along with 3D and mythological games, and social gaming that will continue to grow at a steady pace in the next 4-5 years. With the launch of 3G services, the mobile TV and video landscape in India is also witnessing rapid changes. Tavess believes that India has good future potential for mobile video streaming services, especially for videos focused on cricket highlights and updates, in addition to film based content. However, as many subscribers are not accustomed to paid subscription-based services, the monetization of video content will be primarily through advertisements. Tavess also expects greater adoption of mobile TV with users preferring to watch television on mobile while being on the move. While these initiatives set the platform for growth, it is important for all the players to continuously invest in launching new and innovative data services to keep the momentum up and gain competitive edge. The increased commoditization of voice services with rapidly declining voice tariffs is resulting in diminishing voice ARPU for Indian mobile operators. To address this challenge and
to earn additional revenues
from existing customers,
Indian mobile operators are
increasing their focus on data
services, primarily entertainment services such as
mobile music, gaming and
video/tv.

Airtel 3G Review – Andhra Pradesh (Hyderabad)

As
already
shared
on
this blog, AIRTEL
has
launched
its
3G
services in
Andhra
Pradesh (Hyderabad city) yesterday. With the Hyderabad launch covered on ITN (AIRTEL 3G Service Now in Hyderabad – Andhra Pradesh) we put the services to the test. Airtel ’s 3G FREE Trial offer: Nil – unlike Tata Docomo’s offer of 150 MB free (November 2009) OR Aircel ’s offer of 250 MB Free data usage + 50 Minutes Free Video calling (March 2011). Airtel is not offering any freebies to its customers. It’s “PAY AS YOU GO ” all the way! ACTIVATION PROCEDURE: Activation was really simple, with one having to send <3G> to 121. Within a few seconds the following response was received: 05-04-2011 23:49 – Thank you for your request for 3G activation. To enjoy fast internet access, the handset needs to be 3G compatible. You will be charged @ 30p/20KB. In case you are already subscribed to 2G data pack, then the same will be deactivated. Please reply with 1 to confirm. Having noted the friendly ‘warning ’ that you will LOSE ALL EXISTING 2G DATA , the confirmation <1> was sent to 121. 05-04-2011 23:49 – Thank you for your request. 3G services will be activated within 4 Hrs. You will receive a confirmation sms on activation of the services. Post activation, to choose your data plan, please send 3G to 121 again. Once 3G services are activated, please select Dual network mode/Auto mode/2G & 3G mode in your phone network settings to latch on to 3G network 05-04-2011 23:50 – 3G services have been activated on your mobile. your number. To choose/ change your Plan, reply with 1. 1-Data Plans 2-Deactivate 3G Responding with <1> provides all available 3G options: 05-04-2011 23:56 – 1- Rs. 9 Free 10MB 2- Rs. 60 Free 65MB 3- Rs. 45 30 Mins 4- Rs. 99 Free 100MB 5- Rs. 198 Free 250MB 6- Rs. 450 Free 600 MB 7- Rs. 750 Free 2GB 8- Rs. 675 Free1.25GB 9- Rs. 25 Plan If you wish to activate this plan, please reply with the number of your plan above to confirm. Responding with <3> to avail the Rs. 45 – 30 MINS plan: 05-04-2011 23:57 – Rs. 45 Free 30 Mins : After free data, charges are 30p/20KB. Validity 1 day, Video Call 5p/ sec on Local, STD and Roaming Please reply with 1 to confirm 05-04-2011 23:57 – Your Rs. 45 Free 30 Mins Plan is successfully activated. BROWSING SPEEDS : With the Rs. 45 plan activated, there was NO DATA TRANSFER either to/from the mobile. Seems to be an error on the part of AIRTEL as even after Rs. 45 was charged, no 3G service was provided! DATA TRANSFERRED: Switching into a non-Rs45 plan (ie Default “Pay As You Go” plan speeds were observed as shared below. While browsing speeds can vary by the second, the actual data speeds ranged from 274 to 1083 Kbps, quite impressive for peak hour traffic (Testing done between 11:45 pm – midnight on 05 April). Data transfer size Speed Recorded 100 KB 273.973 Kbps 500 KB 757.576 Kbps 1000 KB 1082.544 Kbps Screenshots of the same are shared below: While checking browsing speeds, one needs to keep in mind the following: *Capacity of Handset used – Nokia C6-01 (supports speeds upto 10.2MBPS) *Signal Strength of BTS (Tower) logged into *Simultaneous Users (both Voice& Data) in the BTS (Tower) logged into *Website being accessed – mobilespeedtest.net CONCLUSION: With a browsing speed of upto 1082 Kbps and few 3G users on Day One of launch, there would in all possibility be further deterioration in speeds as the number of simultaneous users increases. Also non- availability of service with Rs. 45 deducted is a critical instance of charges levied without service provided – something that the AIRTEL technical team needs to immediately look into
